My Story
My giving key was such an organic conversation starter, even though each interaction was almost the same. I would meet a person, we would exchange greetings, we'd go from making eye contact to them staring at my key. After a couple of seconds, they'd usually say, "What's up with the key around your neck?" This happened at gas stations, coffee shops, sporting events, church events, and even the bar.
It always brought a smile to my face because it gave me an opportunity to share my faith as well as the Giving Key's mission. Each interaction usually ended with the person pulling out their phone to follow the Giving Key's Instagram account. Y'all are welcome (*insert winky face emoji*).
I think, though, the part that each person enjoyed the most, was hearing that as dope as each giving key is, there is supposed to come a time where you pass it along. I always emphasized this part which such enthusiasm, because I imagined the joy from the moment where God showed me who I was supposed to pass my key to. That brings me December 31, 2018. I was at worship and prayer night in the Bay Area.
During the open mic portion of the night a young lady, barely out of high school, shared her story of surviving abuse from a former boyfriend and how God was such a source of strength and comfort to her during those hard times. I was in awe of her bravery and courage to share her story publicly, and I was impressed with how she used her story to encourage us.
The common phrase that she repeated was "Let Go," which was the phrase on my giving key. Every time she said it my heart smiled because it was crystal clear to me. This amazing young lady was the person I was supposed to pass my key to! After the New Years countdown, I approached her and expressed my gratitude to her for her bravery and vulnerability. I also told her I wanted to pass my giving key to her. She gladly accepted and gave me the biggest hug I've ever received in my life. I was very blessed to meet her.
